- Do you believe your research will advance knowledge in research, practice, education and policy in occupational therapy?
- Are you ready to share it with your peers, but unsure how or where to get it published?
Why not consider publishing with the British Journal of Occupational Therapy?
We're always looking for members who are ready to take their first step towards publication.
Here is a simple guide to taking those first steps towards publication – on how to prepare and submit an article to the journal.
Research
Ensure you're confident your work is suitable for the journal, and the journal is the right place for your work:
- familiarise yourself with the journal's overview and metrics
- browse recently published articles (freely accessible to RCOT members)
- read the Editor-in-Chief’s editorial strategy for BJOT development.
Prepare
Prepare your article for submission to meet the journal guidelines:
- review the submission guidelines carefully to prepare and format your manuscript accordingly
- make efforts to improve the quality of the manuscript, ensuring the manuscript is well-written.
We encourage use of language services such as Sage Author Services, if required.
Submit
Once you have prepared your article and double checked the manuscript against the guidelines:
- submit your paper through the journal’s online submission portal.
- you will receive an acknowledgement and a reference number for future correspondence.
What next?
Your article will be considered by the Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors and/or two to three reviewers as appropriate following the article review process.

The Editorial Office will be in touch with the authors throughout the process and open to communication and queries from authors.
Please note that some manuscripts take longer to review, particularly those in niche areas which may take longer to find suitable reviewers.
Outcomes
There are five possible outcomes:
- desk reject (paper will not be sent out for review)
- reject after review
- conditional accept with major revisions after review
- conditional accept with minor revisions after review
- accept without change.
Please don't be down-heartened if you don't receive an 'accept without change' on your first submission. Receiving one is very rare!
Accepted!
Should the manuscript be accepted, you will be informed and the production and publication of the article will be managed by Sage, the publishers of the journal.
