We’re excited to announce the launch of three new free e-learning sessions designed for occupational therapists working in perinatal mental health. These sessions focus on occupational therapy approaches to:
- perinatal mental health, physical health and disability
-
returning to work or study after a perinatal mental illness
-
perinatal mental health and neurodiversity.
Occupational therapists play a crucial role in promoting people’s recovery from perinatal mental health challenges. They help remove barriers that limit participation in the occupations — activities, roles and routines — that matter to mothers, their infants and families.
These new sessions were developed by a team of occupational therapists, with valuable input from a midwife and individuals who’ve accessed occupational therapy services. They build on six existing sessions launched in 2020, covering various aspects of occupational therapy and perinatal mental health. The development of these new resources was funded by NHS England, and anyone registered on the eLearning for Healthcare platform can access the full programme.
Sally Payne, RCOT Professional Advisor and programme coordinator says:
‘These sessions are a valuable new resource for occupational therapists working in perinatal mental health. The themes were selected by clinical experts as key areas where occupational therapists can make a significant positive impact on mothers and birthing parents. They equip OTs with the skills and knowledge to support mothers and birthing parents in doing what they need and want to do for themselves, their infants, and their families.’
