We’re pleased to announce that the first in a series of Equity, Diversity and Belonging (EDB) toolkits is now available for all RCOT members and non-members too.
Weve developed the EDB Critical Self-Awareness toolkit with members, as part of our EDB Strategy to build our members’, staff and volunteers’ understanding of EDB. It’ll help everyone develop the skills and confidence to actively oppose discrimination.
‘We've developed this evidence-informed toolkit for every member of the occupational therapy workforce and RCOT community.’
Emma Grover, Professional Development Lead

‘I’ve used the EDB toolkit as a core part of my 2024 reflective practice and CPD. It’s helped me think more about my identity, different aspects of diversity and where I’ve got gaps in my competencies. I really enjoyed the diversity wheel and reflective template, doing it by myself first and then as a group exercise which amplified my learning. The updated HCPC standards about challenging discrimination are clear: I must be aware, take action and raise concerns to ensure mine and my colleagues’ beliefs and biases don’t lead to discrimination in the workplace. This EDB toolkit is helping me on this journey and can help you too.‘
Genevieve Smyth, Occupational Therapist
How will it support me and my CPD?
Working through the toolkit, you’ll learn more about critical reflection and self-assessment relating to Equity, Diversity and Belonging, including the four stages of EDB competence. The toolkit will help OTs:
- build a better awareness of your current level of EDB competence
- improve your understanding of the different dimensions of diversity
- identify the next steps in translating learning and awareness into action on your EDB journey
- think around how this toolkit supports you to meet the revised Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)’s Standards of proficiency.
Registrants must recognise the impact of culture, equality and diversity on practice and practise in a non-discriminatory and inclusive manner HCPC Standard Five
This is the first in a series of EDB toolkits that we'll be offering. Further themes will cover meeting HCPC standards of proficiency, cultural intelligence and competence, and discrimination and allyship. Look out for these in the future.
If you would like to join our EDB mailing list then email
Every OT should be encouraged to complete this toolkit. The toolkit encourages self-reflection and support, wherever someone is on their EDB journey.
