Reviewing our Learning and development standards for pre-registration education

The world we live and work in is a very changed place from when our Learning and development standards for pre-registration education were last published in 2019, and will continue to change.

It’s important our Standards reflect these changes and support future occupational therapists to be prepared for practice in 2030 and beyond.

Background to our project

Why are our Learning and development standards important?

Confidence in the quality education of occupational therapists is essential to the future of the profession.

As the professional body for occupational therapy in the United Kingdom (UK), we determine the current and future needs of the profession and reflect these in our Learning and development standards for pre-registration education (the Standards).

The Standards describe the expectations of the profession that education providers must meet when delivering an occupational therapy pre-registration programme in the UK. The Standards are a cornerstone document to be viewed alongside our Professional standards for occupational therapy practice, conduct and ethics.

Our Standards were last published in 2019. We are therefore reviewing these, with an eye to publication in April 2026.

Quality occupational therapy education is key to the future development of our profession. It is important that all our members and key stakeholders have an opportunity to join the discussion and consultation process for our revised Standards. Our Education Summits will focus on specific topics relevant to the Standards, not reviewing individual standards. This means everyone can join the discussion.

Why are we expanding them to include early careers?

We want to support universities and employers of early career occupational therapists to give the best possible introduction to the next generation.

We know that a significant number of occupational therapists leave the profession in their first five years of registration. Introducing early career standards (closely linked to Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) preceptorship principles) is one action we are taking as part of our Workforce Strategy to support the growth and retention of our profession.

How are the Standards upheld?

We manage an accreditation process, using our Learning and development standard for pre-registration education to assess occupational therapy pre-registration programmes and ensure quality in their design and delivery. All UK providers of pre-registration education have or are working towards our accreditation.

There has been considerable growth in pre-registration education in recent years – in both the number of providers and the number and range of programmes. Our current quality assurance mechanisms need a new approach to ensure continued stakeholder confidence in the delivery of effective pre-registration education, supporting quality early career occupational therapists.

We're undertaking a project to re-imagine our quality assurance approach. This project and the review and expansion of the Standards are closely aligned, and programme providers will be kept up to date and supported in the progression of this work.

How and when can I get involved?

We will be completing this project over several phases.

A flow chart showing our Review, Revise, Consult, Publish approach to the development of our new education standards

You can get involved at two phases of the project:

  • Review – members and non-members can join our Education Summits. RCOT members can also join our virtual discussion forum to be part of the conversation throughout this phase.
  • Consult – we will share a draft copy of our revised and expanded Standards for member and key stakeholder consultation. You will be able to share your comments via an MS Form.

The Education Summits

We are hosting seven Education Summits.

Each has a different stakeholder focus, so please sign up for the Summit you feel is most relevant to you.

Who can attend the Education Summits?

RCOT members and non-members with an interest and understanding of occupational therapy pre-registration education and early careers.

How do I take part in an Education Summit?

Please identify the Education Summit that is most relevant to your area of work/stakeholder role.

You will be asked to provide us with some information about you. This will include completing our anonymous diversity data collection form, and information about your role. This will help us to understand who is engaging in the Summits and the areas they represent.

About a week before the Summit, we will send you some preparatory information. At the summit you'll have the opportunity to take part in two topic specific discussion groups. You’ll be asked to choose which two groups you want to join. You’ll also receive some other information to support your thinking and reflections prior to joining the Summit.

The Summit discussion groups will follow a ‘Start/Stop/Continue/Explore’ structure and will focus on broad topics rather than specific aspects of the Standards.

Our revised Standards will be published in April 2026 and then be reviewed next in 2030. We have an exciting opportunity to think big and bold about the education of our future occupational therapists. How can we best enable them, and those who support their learning to have the skills and attributes needs to be an occupational therapist working in 2030 and beyond?

Our member-only online discussons

This discussion will be hosted on an online platform. RCOT members with an interest and understanding of occupational therapy pre-registration education and early careers are welcome to submit their interest to join the online discussion between September and December 2024.

The discussion itself will open on Monday 30 September 2024 and close on Friday 6 December 2024.

There will be a structured post related to a specific theme announced per week, so different aspects of the Standards can be discussed, and the conversation topics can be easy to follow.

To join the discussion forum please register your interest using this Microsoft Form. Please note, you must be an RCOT member.

If you would like to be a part of this discussion and are not yet a member you can join us today!
