I have recently joined the RCOT Council, a position, if I am being honest, I took on more by accident than design. Like most managers and clinicians, due to work pressures, I was reluctant to commit the time as well as being fearful of my lack of knowledge regarding RCOT business and what I would be able to contribute.
However my experience to date has allayed those fears. I am quickly getting a greater understanding of the importance of the role and the responsibilities of Council members in ensuring the RCOT is well governed and acting at all times in the best interests of its members. Thankfully the time commitment is not as onerous as originally feared and I have thoroughly enjoyed gaining an insight to the complexity and challenges associated with the management of the organisation as it seeks to transform and set out a clear vision and strategy.
In the short time I have been involved I have already gained an insight to the robust governance arrangements within the RCOT and the value of Council in overseeing and monitoring the delivery of its strategic aims and business plan.
I would actively encourage occupational therapists, managers or clinicians, to consider standing for the Council to contribute to the future direction of the profession. The experience also presents a unique opportunity to enhance your own personal development through exposure to organisational management, in doing so acquiring skills which are transferable to the workplace.
The Council needs applicants with a wide range of skills. My perception before getting involved was that management experience was an essential requirement. However, I have quickly learned that the role of RCOT and Council is to act in the best interests of its members. Consequently, I think the most important attribute for anyone interested is to be in tune with the needs of the membership in order to inform and influence the RCOT’s strategic direction.
